Mythic animal Djenne - SOLD OUT
Ceramics in traditional African art
In Africa, sites in the Djenné region have revealed numerous terracotta of animals and reptiles, ranging from snakes coiled a few centimeters in diameter to large animal figures of incredible size and weight. The reason for these zoomorphic sculptures is not clear, but it is thought that they represented half-divine beings revered in particular sanctuaries.
If this is the case, it would be proof of the survival in this region of pre-Islamic animist cults among ordinary people. This African terracotta represents a curious quadruped possibly representing a chimeric animal, a horse or a donkey or a ram or a sheep. Our African art gallery is the reference in terms of art premiere of Africa in Belgium. Visit our site and buy tribal art at the best price.
