Kuba art: spiritual beauty

Kuba Ngondo boxes have become emblematic symbols of African art and are highly prized by collectors and art lovers the world over. Their complexity and beauty bear witness to the artistic skills and cultural richness of the Kuba people.

The traditional geometric patterns on Kuba Ngondo boxes have deep cultural significance for the Kuba people. Each pattern is unique and may represent different elements of Kuba cosmology, spiritual symbols or artistic expressions.

Kuba Ngondo boxes were once used to store precious objects such as jewellery, medicinal herbs or ritual objects. They were also given as gifts at weddings and other special occasions. Today, these boxes are valued both as collectors' items and as symbols of Kuba cultural identity.

This box comes from a Belgian private family, the appearance of this work leaves no doubt about its age which is established around the 1940s despite the absence of traces of use. It is possible that it was offered for sale in a local market in Kasai as was often the case during the colonial period, arousing the interest of Belgian expatriates.
