

The Dan are cultivators living in the forest of northeastern Liberia. They live on the culture of laughter, cassava, plantains and yams. For most Dan women, spoons were once important wooden utensils whose shapes varied according to function. This spoon is more important than an ordinary utensil because, by virtue of its size, it is considered a badge of dignity, they are shaken by their owners and are only used ritually to carry the rice which is thrown in the air to wish welcome to guests.
