Chokwe Luena oracle

A african wooden oracle with two opposed heads, each carved with the hair swept back in a series of locks. The face is heart shaped with arching brow and almond shaped eyes. The nose is short and wedge shaped, the mouth small and open. The body is in the form of a cone with drilled holes forming decoration. The arms are made from twine with shells tied to the ends.

The Chokwe inhabit present day Angola but originate from the Lunda area of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Due to a political dispute in the 15th century the Lunda aristocracy migrated south and settled in what is now Angola. The Chokwe are governed by a king called Mwana Ngana, who distributes hunting grounds and cultivated areas.
