Luba pipe

African art and divination

Luba pipes are part of the panoply used by priests and priestesses for divination, a practice deeply rooted in the culture of the kingdom. As seen in the attached photos, the Luba used horns, figurines, oracles, pipes and many more for this purpose.

This African wooden pipe has the particularity of having a hearth surmounted by an aesthetic representation of a kneeling woman, hands on the breasts. There are beautiful scarifications on the abdomen and a headdress pulled back. Through this piece, we can thus guess the archetype of the Luba woman, of whom I have attached a period photo.

We also find this type of representation on calabashes, arrow holders and mboko cup holders for example. This piece is similar to the Kabwelulu calabashes, an example of which can be seen on the cover of the book LUBA - aux sources du Zaire, F. NEYT.
