Ashanti Duafé comb

African art and hairdressing

This traditional African one-piece carved wooden comb comes from the Ashanti people in Ghana. At the top is a rounded, flat head similar to those of Akua'ba fertility figures.

African Ashanti combs called duafé were used in the development of complex hairstyles for women. The intricately carved patterns have symbolic meaning. Combs of non-standard dimensions exist but were not used for headdresses, they were used as a badge of honor.
