Tabwa divination board
Divinatory practices in R. D. Congo
This wooden divination tablet comes from the Lake Tanganyika region in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. At the top, we see two heads referring to the pairs of ancestor statues called mipasi that we find in African art Tabwa.
Tabwa statuary very often includes body and facial scarifications similar to those worn by individuals as seen in the attached photo. The Batabwa are located to the east of the Luba kingdom and share cultural and sculptural characteristics with the latter.
