Olono Maasai shield

Shields in African art

The Masai or Maasai are mainly settled in southwestern Kenya and northern Tanzania. They are known as great warriors who roam the savannahs, and they are known for their superb body paintings and characteristic clothing. In the numerous photos taken in situ, they are most often seen armed with their spear and oval shield. I offer you a wooden example. It has a median line and shows wear and tear, with some old polychromy still visible. These traditional shields are called olono in Maa, the Maasai language.

The stand is included. This piece was part of the collection of Charles F. Bazelaire, a painter and sculptor from Brussels who died in 2021, and who was passionate about African art.
