Mangbetu Namambele knife
African knives like this served as both tool and ornament for the Mangbetu.
Frequently worn by men at the waist, in a sheath of elephant hair, they were however not exclusively the prerogative of men and could also be possessed and used by women.
"Namambele" knives like this were worn on the belt, on the right side and were considered a mark of distinction.
They were the exclusive property of the ruling Mangbetu aristocracy.
