This textile headdress belongs to the ashetu type, one of the characteristic forms of prestige headgear from the Cameroon Grassfields. Although particularly associated with the Bamileke, comparable caps were also used in neighbouring kingdoms, including among the Bamum. They were worn on important public occasions by chiefs, titled men and dignitaries, headgear serving throughout the Grassfields as a visible expression of rank, identity and authority.

The distinctive structure of the ashetu is generally understood as recalling elaborate male hairstyles formerly worn in the region. Crocheted projections reproduced bundled or sculpted locks of hair and were sometimes reinforced with small wooden inserts. Such caps could appear during harvest festivals, initiations, funerals and court ceremonies, where dress played an important role in communicating social hierarchy.
