Large rhythmic instrument formed by a wooden frame supporting several rows of hollow spherical wooden rattles, each pierced with a slit allowing the contents to sound when shaken. The frame is reinforced and partly wrapped with old textile strips.

In Igbo musical traditions of southeastern Nigeria, shaken idiophones play an important role in dance, masquerade, communal celebrations and funerary performances. Music and dance are closely connected, and percussion instruments often provide the repeated rhythmic patterns structuring the performance.

This instrument would have been shaken during performance, the large number of individual sound-producing elements creating a dense and powerful rhythmic effect. Its substantial construction suggests repeated collective use rather than a purely decorative purpose.

An Igbo attribution is consistent with its sound-producing principle and probable context of use, although the unusual multi-row construction warrants a cautious broader attribution to the musical traditions of southeastern Nigeria.
