Fali Kirdi Ham Pilu doll

African descent and art

Suitors Fali and Kirdi in northern Cameroon offered their fiancee a highly stylized figure that the bride-to-be wore on her as seen in the context photo of a young girl carrying a doll on her back, in 1941. These dolls called ham pilu figured the future offspring and had to ensure the fertility of the woman. These statuettes are often, as is the case here, adorned with necklaces and jewelry. The doll was mothered with the same care that would be worn later on to the newborn.
