Fon Bocio fetish figure
Voodoo in traditional African art
African statuette covered with a thick sacrificial patina and adorned with accessories. In the Fon tradition, the Voodoo or Vodun cult occupies an important place. In the event of a problem in everyday life, individuals go to the sculptor to make a figurine which they then have loaded by the witch doctor, a specialist in magical problems and practices. The witch doctor and his client practice occult sessions together for a fee. The fetish is then loaded and must be used to solve the client's problem. These can be relationship, financial, health, etc. problems.
This figurine is still fully loaded and will delight lovers of bocio, which is the generic name for these pieces with sometimes surreal and surprising shapes.
In attached photos, some examples of Fon fetishes in context. For more information, see the book VAUDOU, J. Kerchache.
