Songye Nkishi power figure
Songye African statue with accessories and its summit horn. This is a nkishi power figure intended for protection against curses and bad weather. This very aesthetic piece comes from the Basongye who had the custom of sculpting pieces of this type of various dimensions ranging from the pocket fetish to the major statue one meter high depending on whether it was necessary to protect an individual or an entire village.
We find a necklace of blue pearls, metal elements on the face, a horn still stuck in the skull, a nail on the navel and a belly bag.
The piece is therefore still accompanied by the accessories giving it its powers. Indeed, it is the magical charge which gives the character its protective power.
This statue comes from the collection of Bob Berete (see attached photo), an African art dealer who practiced in Switzerland, France, Belgium and the United States, in particular as a tout of choice for Pierre Dartevelle, one of the greatest Brussels merchants.
