Power figure of the Lemba Kongo-Manyanga
Art and wealth Bakongo
This couple of African monoxyle statues is connected by the base as well as the interlacing of their arms in the back. It is a type of figure of Bakongo-Manyanga origin, in this case, dedicated to the Lemba cult.
There are still metal rings that were usually removed because it was established in the tradition that it was forbidden to touch them. They are still present here, which is remarkable.
The lemba was a ritual association present north of the lower Congo River. When an individual was admitted into the brotherhood, this adhesion was accompanied by a marriage. An object of strength like this was then carved for later use in healing rituals.
Access to the lemba association was very expensive because a banquet had to be prepared for hundreds of guests. This type of generosity helped to alleviate social conflicts.
Investing in a healing medium was also good for the image of wealthy lemba members as it protected them against the jealousy of others.
