Chamba couple - Sold Out
Formal abstraction in African art
Couple of protective African Chamba statues. Established in the south of the Bénué, the Chamba sculpted protective effigies close to the Tiv statuary. These rooms were frozen in the ground inside the dwellings as evidenced by the darkened bases. The realization of this couple is remarkable, the figuration has certainly to do with fertility.
The treatment of the bodies is faithful to the classic stylization of the artistic corpus Chamba which shines with its complex simplicity.
This stylistic approach is also observed within other geographically close ethnic groups, including the Mumuye, the Tiv, the Wurkum, etc.
Pieces from an important Swiss collection.
