Chokwe Chibinda Ilunga ancestor figure - SOLD OUT
In African art Chokwe, the founding hero named Chibinda Ilunga is a subject of choice for sculptors. This imposing and superbly sculpted statue was made in his effigy. We know him by his very complex headdress with curved edges and the Realian objects he carries in his hands; chef's staff and cornucopia.
The face is made in a very typical way with very wide eyes as is the mouth. The trunk is not left out of details: we observe the designs of the ribs.
The Chokwe are located in northern Angola, southern Democratic Republic of the Congo and to a lesser extent Zambia. Culturally and stylistically, they share many traits, including the Mukanda initiation, with their neighbors Luena, Luchazi, etc.
