The characters in initiation and African art Lega
African wooden statuette carved by an artist Lega in the first half of the 20th century. This traditional statue is linked to the Bwami, the very famous initiatory secret society of the Lega. The character is represented here standing, arms raised towards the sky. The body is complex, with perforated fins. This African art figurine represents Katanda, the adulterous woman that any member of the Bwami must avoid being.
