Dogon ancestor figure

Authentic African Dogon statue from Mali. The stylized face with smooth shapes are due to the repeated use of this statue during rituals dedicated to the cult of the ancestors. Like most of the ancient Dogon African art objects, the statues are sometimes presented with missing parts, sometimes even in simple fragments, real archaeological artefacts, their antiquity which can go back several centuries is no stranger to this.

The Dogon have a sophisticated belief system centred on fertility and ancestor worship. The Dogon also believe in various malevolent and benevolent spirits that populate the bush, trees and uninhabited places.
