Tellem Dogon figure

The traditional art of the peoples of Black Africa

The memory of the Tellem is preserved in the cliffs in granaries where they buried their dead and in sanctuaries occupying rocky cavities where this statue was found in the middle of the 20th century. A little anecdote, the person who collected this Tellem statue explored the cliffs and caves of Bandiagara until the 1960s. He lived for two months in a family house called "ginna", several floors high, made of dried clay bricks after being mixed with straw.
