Baoule Asie Usu Figure
Aesthetics in African art
A wooden statue from Baoule people representing a male with crest shaped hair with long plait to the back. The face has long, closed eyes, flared nostrils and heart shaped mouth. Like the female counterpart there are scarification marks to the temples and side of the mouth. The figure has a long plaited beard which is grasped by the right hand. The long body has a distended stomach and scarification marks. Mounted on a custom made stand.
This very finely carved figure is the receptacle intended to receive a spirit of the bush. The coin is named after Asia Usu.
