Suku power figure

Stylistic designs in African art from Bandundu

African wooden statuette with a lustrous and dark patina presenting a strong stylistic bias in the treatment of the face. Indeed, with the strongly lengthened nose and curved upwards is adjoining a mouth supported by the joined hands. A high headdress overhangs the character's head and denotes authority. This kind of piece comes from the African art of the northern Suku in southern Bandundu.

Although this piece also seems close to the Yaka, the gesture of the hand on the lips and the very expressive treatment of this facies, as well as the ridge marking the torso at the level of the stomach are dominant characteristics of the sculpture of the extreme north of Suku country.

The function of this Suku statue and its counterparts is to personify the force which has in the past caused death, disease or misfortune and may start again in the near future. In this sense, the statue is associated with the power of the elders although it is not a representation of an ancestor.
