Metoko figure
Initiation in Congo African art
This wooden Metoko statue depicts a male with distinctive geometric shaped head, almost forming a diamond pattern. The face is covered in a lighter pigment to the dark patina of the wood. The facial features are simply carved and yet reveal a haunting presence through the round, staring eyes. The body is sensitively carved and the hands rest to either side of the stomach. The figure is naked with prominent genitals.
Like the Bwami society of the Lega, the Metoko also have a secret initiatory society that is known as bukota, which is open to both men and women. Like the Bwami, the function of this society is to regulate the social, political and economic life of the people. Figures such as this, are used during the initiation rites to create a sense of social cohesion through the recognition of significant ancestors. These impart secret knowledge to those moving up through the grades of the society, as well as the function of healing and divination.
