Tabwa Mipasi ancestor couple
Ancestor worship in eastern D.R. Congo
Couple of wooden statues depicting two Batabwa ancestors, a man and a woman. There are characteristic elements such as the short headdress for the man and the long headdress for the woman, which can be seen in the attached context photos; but also and above all the impressive body scarifications worn by the Tabwa, whether on the body or the face. as also seen in the attached photos.
The Tabwa are famous in African art in particular for their representations of ancestors called mipasi, of which we have two beautiful examples here.
