Ngbaka Ngbandi figure
Art and mastery of forms in African art
This statue represents an Ngbaka Ngbandi character with a stylised body. The arms go down the length of the body, the chest protruding and the rounded shoulders well held. The long neck supports a head with primitive features, a thin half-open mouth, surmounted by a fine triangular nose and hatched scarification marks dividing the face into two parts. The back of the head is also provided with quality work by the sculptor. Very nice contrasting patina, shiny and dark in places, presence of nice cracks on the patina attesting to some ritual use.
