Luba Mbudye priest figure

The Luba aesthetic in African art

Statue of an African woman: this is a priestess of Mbudye in charge of divination. Among the Luba, divination was in fact not reserved for men; women occupied a large place in responsibilities and in society for historical reasons.

The large headdress worn by the priestesses, of which I have attached an old contextual photo taken from the beginning of the 20th century, can be recognized on the piece. On the breasts and trunk, the statue is superbly decorated with the image of the scarifications that were worn by the women as seen in the second pop-up photo showing a group of beautiful scarified women.
