The cult of ancestors in African art

This traditional statue comes from the Hemba, an ethnic group from the Democratic Republic of the Congo that was long considered part of the Luba kingdom. It was only late that the originality of the Hemba corpus was recognized.

The latter is mainly composed, as far as the statues are concerned, of ancestor figures called singiti. They come in the form of standing figures, most often male, with a very neat aesthetic. Note the fidelity between the statuette that I present to you here and the man whose portrait is attached.
