Chokwe Namata spouse figure

African art and symbols

In African Chokwe art, there are effigies statues of principal wife of chief. They are called namata. We see that the sculptor has worked meticulously to create beautiful soft curves, a very complex headdress with streaks and braids, as well as a naturalistic face of course in the style of the famous Chokwe mwana pwo masks.

The patterns of the headdress not only have an aesthetic aim but above all have a symbolic and ideological significance referring to the human, animal, vegetable and supernatural world.
