Zande figure
North Congo: traditional art of initiation
Extracted from their ritual context, little is known about the exact use of the Zande statues. It is nevertheless certain that they were the property of high-ranking initiates who used them within the framework of the initiation of young men.
The North of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ubangi region, is inhabited by a heterogeneous set of ethnic groups who share certain cultural and religious practices. Their artistic corpuses also had influences on each other, which is why it is not always easy to clearly identify the ethnic origin of the statuettes from this area.
The Zande statue that I am offering here has stylistic characteristics such as small, slightly bent legs supporting a long trunk without arms. The head has two slightly curved half faces and a face gathered in the center.
In the African art of this region, we also find the Ngbaka, the Ngbandi, etc.
