Large Songye Nkishi power figure

Protective power in African art

Impressive Songye African statue still wearing its ritual accessories. This is an nkishi type fetish statue made to protect an entire village. The face is imbued with a strong stylistic bias. There are metal blades covering part of the face, specially intended for protection against bad weather.

On the body, a belly bag and a loincloth. The navel and the skull are still flanked by a horn filled with a magic charge. The treatment of the mouth is worth mentioning: powerful and extruded, the mouth is open, showing its teeth. This symbolizes all the power of the word in the role of protection against evil spells.
