Buyu Sikasingo ancestor figure
Pre-Bembe statuary: ancestor worship
Buyu Sikasingo African statues (ethnic group that occupied part of Kivu, R. D. Congo, before the Babembe) are highly appreciated for their exceptional avant-garde appearance. Limbs and shapes are stylized. This is an ancestor statue whose ethnic name is Esusany'o ya m'shi'ùlùca wa m'lùme.
The sculptor who made this work is undoubtedly a master in traditional African Buyu art, given the finesse of the elements, in particular the scarifications and the treatment of the face.
