Buyu ancestor figure
African Buyu (pre-Bembe) statues such as this one play a role in the worship of ancestors, founders of small independent political entities whose matrilineal forms of filiation have been gradually replaced by patrilineal norms.
Whole figures or busts, often in the form of named and genealogically linked ancestor groups, are kept in small shrines under the authority and care of a petty chief, village chief or lineage elder. dominant.
Throughout the territory associated with the Bembe ethnic group, worship of individually identified ancestors (bashumbu) is practiced at different levels of the lineage structure, worship sometimes associated with different beliefs in the spirits of nature (biseko, bahombo); however, few sculptures are used in this setting.
In times of crisis, the elder in charge of worship slept in the sanctuary and, with certain helpers, engaged in invocations, prayers and libations so as to obtain benevolence and help from the ancestors.
