Tetela nkumvi slit drum

Drums in African art

Traditional drums such as this are called nkumvi or lukumbi depending on the region. Drums are numerous in African art. Like many so-called "slit" models, this one served on the one hand as a communication tool in order to transmit messages far away; there are also large models in order to increase the range of the sounds sent. But it also integrated into small festive orchestras.

In view of its recognizable shape, this is a Tetela drum, a Bantu ethnic group located between Lomami and Sankuru in the province of Kasai.
