Yaka Nkooku Ngoombu slit drum

This African drum is a piece of monoxyl wood whose body has been hollowed out to obtain a sound box. A typical yaka style head sits atop this trunk. This is a very classic typology in African Yaka art.
Traditional drums of this type are called nkooku ngoombu or nkoko ngombo. It was used by the Healer-Witch Doctor to summon and communicate with his protective spirits.
