Lobala Bango chief sword

Regalia in African art

Superb African knife with a finely chiseled blade. The characteristic shape dividing into two curved appendages makes it possible to identify it as coming from the Lobala. These are close to the Ngbaka and the Bonjo. This type of knife was a luxury attribute for notables and chefs. They were used for ceremonial purposes, especially in initiation rites for young men.

Another copper example has been published in Fatal Beauty, Plate 79 (2013).
