Pende Axe Adze
African adze Axe
Old Pende ax from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We observe a worked handle surmounted by a head bearing black pigment on the cap and features. The blade is chiseled in copper and decorated.
In African art, there are many traditional axes. If they constitute weapons, they are also very often, just like knives, objects of prestige. A high dignitary will have the means to have a beautiful worked piece carved like this one bearing a blade of copper, a precious metal.
Beautiful axe brought from Kinshasa in the 1950's. The age of the wood, the general shape of the carving, the methods and techniques used, as well as the use of copper are a number of important elements in order to date the object accurately.
Weapons with copper blades are often parade objects, often belonging to high-ranking people, they are rare.
