Lega Lukwakongo Mask

mystical art in miniature

Lukwakongo Lega masks

Masquettes of this type are mostly carved from the wood of the muntoko tree (Alstonia), usually have a bleached face and the forehead and edges usually show a prominent brown patina as is quite the case here.

The wooden mask is one of the most important insignia of an insider of the penultimate higher grade, lutumbo lwa yananio. After receiving it, the mask is carefully kept in the satchel of a man with other emblems and guarded in his house by his wife kalonda.
