Yela Ekanga mask

African Mbole art

Masks of this type are quite rare in private collections of African art that are listed and known to the general public. The Mbole people is a very hierarchical society, the socio-cultural organization is omnipresent, among other things it organizes initiation rites, governs relations and punishes transgressions. This masks comes from a subgroup of the Mbole : Yela people.

These circular ekanga masks are kept in a special basket in the meeting lodge of the very secret ekanga society.
