Mbole Ofika Figure

This figure with shackled feet represents a member of the Lilwa society hanged for revealing its secrets. These effigies must remind initiates of the duty of silence. When it was used for ceremonies marking the end of initiations, it was carried by means of two rods acting as a stretcher, the patina of use of this statue demonstrates its ritual use.
