Yela helmet mask - SOLD OUT
Rare traditional helmet from the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In these forest regions, many ethnic groups with blurred and porous borders coexist and share ritual practices and typological elements. Among these populations, the Yela, close to the Mbole, sculpt rather rare masks. We recognize them by the streaks in the lively polychromy that run through the faces. Here, an exceptional piece: a helmet mask with three characteristic facies as well as decorations.
This piece was collected by Mr. Mongu whose pieces our gallery offers exclusively for sale. On request, a document of provenance will be provided to the buyer.
Mr. Mongu lived in Kinshasa for many years before studying and teaching in Belgium. During many stays in Congo, he traveled this vast country in search of authentic and rare pieces.
