Pende Kindombolo mask

The diversity of African Pende masks

This traditional ovoid mask comes from Oriental Pende. The latter are renowned for their very geometric masks, in opposition to those of the more naturalistic Western Bapende. This mask is called kindombolo. It is a clown mask, in English it is nicknamed "trouble maker" because of its outrageous behavior during its outings.

The dancer wears it accompanied by a red-dyed raffia jumpsuit embellished with branches and leaves. When it comes out, the mask is insulted by the young spectators who don't care and parody the other more noble masks.
