Pende Munyangi mask

Shapes and colors in African art

This small, very abstract African mask came out on the occasion of the festivities marking the end of initiations as well as during agrarian rites during the sowing of millet. It is a traditional mask bearing the name of munyangi, originating from the oriental Bapende known for their very stylized masks. The growths at the top of masks of this type do not represent horns but the arms of the chief.
