Baoule mask Kamer style
Refinement in African art from Côte d'Ivoire
I am offering you here an exceptional African Baoulé mask of a very particular type: the one known as the "master of Kamer". This style can easily be recognized by the circular shape of the mask, reminiscent of the shape of the Moon.
The balance and symmetry of the elements of the face is perfect, like the sculptural quality of the details and the treatment of the eyes among others.
African Baoulé art is undoubtedly considered to be the most successful from the point of view of aesthetic sculptural mastery. The first Western settlers to discover this corpus were immediately seized by its finesse, going against Western preconceived ideas concerning so-called "primitive" art from Africa.
This is probably a portrait mask.
This piece comes from the important collection of a Belgian painter passionate about beautiful pieces. Support is included.
