Dan Maou mask
The African Dan mask, people and cultures of West Africa
This anthropo-zoomorphic mask ending in the beak of a bird of prey is a pure masterpiece of West African art. It comes from a Belgian private collection where its owner was among other things a confirmed collector and expert in extra-European classical art. He acquired this mask from an auctioneer in 2009.
Controlled by priest-devils, the people fear them for the spells they cast on the people. The masks are parables of their actions, both visual signs of the spirits that lurk and the voices that are heard, like flights of birds that can be present in several places at once.
The masks are sold with a high quality customised stand.
