Pende Fumu chief mask
The masked dances of the Bapende
Inheritance & Succession, Private family, Waterloo, Belgium
This African wooden mask with a red patina is that of the chief and vigilante Pende fumu, originally wearing a characteristic four-pointed headdress. His face is covered with red tukula powder and bears the scarifications of his tribe.
During the performances, he holds a fly swatter in his hand. He dances solemnly "in the manner of lions". The mbuya fumu mask is a subject often depicted on ivory ikhoko pendants.
The Pende or Bapende are very famous for their masks which are both varied because they feature a host of different characters, and with very different styles depending on the region. In the attached photo, observe the dancer on his stilts wearing a fumu mask with his characteristic headdress.
