Senufo Kpeliye mask

Poro in African art

The traditional art of the Senoufo in Côte d'Ivoire is closely linked to their main subsistence activity: agriculture. The agrarian rites gave birth, as for the Bambara, to a multitude of objects including masks linked to Poro initiation. They are also known various types of statues ranging from large figures intended to beat the rhythm of the dances, to maternities and equestrian figures. A stylistic constant nevertheless generally allows them to rally together: the curved face and the prognathic chin projecting a small and toothed mouth.

Here I offer you a kepliye mask in very good outgoing condition for the dances linked to the poro initiation. On the top there are representations of the totem bird hornbill which also exists as full statues.
