Senufo Korobla Poniugo mask

Supernatural Bush Creatures in African Tribal Art

In African Senufo art, the famous Korobla or Poniugo (or even Kponyugo) masks are meant to arouse fear and foster uncertainty through their disturbing features .

African masks such as this are not representative of any specifically identified animal but actually feature elements referring to powerful animals such as crocodiles, antelopes and warthogs.

The open jaw presents sharp teeth, the mask alludes to a creature ready to devour its prey.
After being consecrated, this mask was used in Côte d'Ivoire during village festivities linked to the Poro society, the main initiatory society of the Senufo.
