Pende Kiwoyo Muyombo mask

Masks and initiations in African art

Superb African mask with a very elongated neck. This traditional mask comes from the western Bapende (more exactly from the Katundu region) and bears the name of Kiwoyo Muyombo representing the victorious hunter. It is characterized by a decorated extension of the base of the chin.

Pende masks are worn during the closing ceremonies of initiation schools. Many masked characters represent heroes, animals, the village notables. They take turns dancing out of sight of the women.

Support is included. This mask comes from the vast and now well-known collection of François Charles Bazelaire, painter and sculptor from Brussels passionate about African art.
