Baoule Mblo mask

Baoule aesthetic in African art

African mask in dense wood testifying to the aesthetic research of Baoulé sculptors, undoubtedly the most successful in traditional African art. The face with scarifications is encrusted with a reddish patina. The breastplate is perforated and crossed by a wooden bar which was clamped in the mouth by the dancer, holding the mask in front of his face. The headdress has been very finely chiseled and detailed.

It is a mblo mask that took part in village celebrations among the Baoule, in Ivory Coast.
