African Metoko mask
Metoko African art from the DRC
This rare African Metoko mask is one of the most beautiful creations of the sculptor's art!
Coming from the neighbouring Lega population, Metoko masks are rare. Even rarer are the fgurative sculptures with such an intensity of abstraction and movement.
These creations are symbols of rank and status. Used during initiations, they may be worn by initiates paying homage to deceased high-ranking figures. As in BWAMI practice, this illustrates the dramatic context of initiations.
